Enabling radical innovation to address the climate crisis
Early April 2019, 100 visionary thinkers and thought leaders from around the world gathered in Songdo (Republic of Korea) to participate in the first edition of Resilience Frontiers, a disruptive brainstorming conference organized during the Korea Global Adaptation Week. The event was catalyzed by the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat, in collaboration with multiple private and public sector partners, including Canada’s International Development Research Centre, EIT-Climate-KIC, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Global Water Partnership, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs. Futurists, artists and a Zen master also took part in the conference.
During 5 days, international experts used strategic foresight methods, and mobilized innovative collective intelligence processes to answer defining questions of our time: how can we maximize our long-term resilience to climate change? Which opportunities and challenges could frontier technologies, such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, the internet of things, autonomous systems, satellite technologies and biotechnologies, unleash? How could new social practices and movements towards sustainability influence our future? What would a desirable climate-resilient world look like in 2030? Which changes in our values, institutions and complex support systems would this entail?
You can discover the 2030 vision of a climate-resilient world in the summary document that was just released. If you wish to have a feel of the event, you can also check the short video.
The brainstorming conference is only the beginning of a two-year collective intelligence process during which a variety of out-of-the box thinkers will exchange ideas, refine visions, design pathways and define milestones as part of a roadmap towards this climate-resilient future. A nexus of experts has been set up to continue the conversation, and various follow-up events will be organized.
