Using foresight methodologies, Resilience Frontiers has developed eight cross-cutting and holistic pathways of change. A diverse and international group of multi-disciplinary experts have found that, if these eight pathways begin moving together in unison, we can achieve an irreversible shift towards a desirable world of permanent resilience.

The pathway teams are now working to identify the first-mover actions to kickstart this journey.

1. Transformed relationship of humanity with nature

To secure the long-term wellbeing of people and the planet, humanity must live in harmony with the natural world. Which means engaging in everyday activities that have a net positive effect on nature. By using frontier technologies in ways that allow us to enrich, rather than deplete, our environment and learning from the knowledge of indigenous peoples, we can achieve a symbiotic oneness that secures our collective wellbeing.

2. Lifelong learning for environmental stewardship

Lifelong learning should teach us to see ourselves as guardians of nature and foster an appreciation of the active role we must play in nurturing it. Education can embrace this collective responsibility in new and creative ways, with indigenous leaders, art, film, community events and digital platforms all complementing a journey of stewardship.

3. Universal and equitable access to and stewardship of [big] data and frontier technologies

Technologies like big data, AI, digital twinning platforms and cutting-edge earth observation systems can help create a more resilient and sustainable future. Governed ethically in the collective interests of people and planet, frontier technologies can safeguard the global commons while providing tools that increase sustainable abundance, resource stewardship and circularity.

4. Equitable and inclusive management of water and other natural resources

Managing natural resources effectively means providing equitable access to the water, air and land that sustain our lives and livelihoods. Participatory management backed by fair access to geospatial, AI and big data technologies can protect these vital ecosystem services for the communities that rely on them.

5. Equitable management of transboundary concerns

Cooperation, not competition, underpinning transboundary relationships will allow the collective conservation, restoration and regeneration of ecosystems spanning political borders. Equitable use of frontier technologies and legally binding agreements can help protect shared resources and the rights of those most vulnerable.

6. Applying a holistic, ecosystem-centred approach to optimise future health and wellbeing

Living in neighbourhoods that merge with the natural world will create regenerative ecosystems designed to optimise human and ecological health. Circular materials, biophilic design, a one health approach, and real-time data systems can help these human-natural systems thrive together.

7. Regenerative food production

Regenerative food production practices that work with nature will boost crop yields and surrounding ecosystems to ensure no one goes hungry. Permaculture principles, stronger water retention, nutrient renewal, biodiversity restoration and frontier technologies can help produce nutritious food that is accessible and affordable to all.

8. A rebuilt financial and economic system for natural and human prosperity

Frontier technologies can create innovative financial mechanisms that channel funding to companies, organizations and individuals committed to a sustainable, resilient and equitable world. A shift in how we conceptualize value can link wealth directly to the welfare of others and the wellbeing of the planet.
