Unpacking the pathways in Botswana

Resilience Frontiers’ latest event took place during the Botswana Global Adaptation Week 2022, from 22-26 August in Gaborone, Botswana.

This second brainstorming meeting saw participants use foresight thinking to unpack the eight Resilience Frontiers pathways towards a desirable future. Exploring how the pathways can be most effective in achieving a desirable world beyond 2030, a diverse group of experts and practitioners took a creative design approach to imagining this future.

Those who took part “all shared a desire for a better world and looked at what it means to be resilient in the long term,” said Youssef Nassef, Director, Adaptation, UNFCCC, and Founder of Resilience Frontiers.

The event was honoured to receive a visit from His Excellency, the President of Botswana, Dr. Mokgweetsi E. K Masisi.

While the Resilience Frontiers mindset and approach to the future was hailed by the Minister of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism for Botswana, the Honourable Philda Nani Kereng, who participated in the discussions.

“Resilience Frontiers see themselves as the lens, looking ahead and wondering what things should happen for us to get to the planet that we want to see,” the Minister said.

In Botswana this approach to unpacking the pathways led to a “refined set of storylines which portray the types of desirable futures that we want under these pathways,” added Youssef.

The Resilience Frontiers team will now harness the outcomes of the brainstorming meeting as it builds towards the Resilience Lab at COP27 – where the journey to unpack the pathways will continue.
